The hospital corridors smelled of antiseptic and fear.
Shruti hurried in, tears streaming down her face. Her heart pounded as she stood outside the room where Daniel had been admitted. He had survived a devastating road accident and had just undergone major brain surgery. The moment a colleague called to say he had regained consciousness, she left work halfway through the day and rushed to the hospital.
She paused at the door.
What right did she have to be there?
They had met only a handful of times through formal meetings. There was an unspoken connection between them—a feeling that perhaps he cared for her as deeply as she cared for him. But nothing had been said. Nothing had been promised.
It was the early 1980s. Falling in love across cultures was difficult enough. Across religions, it was almost unthinkable.
Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the door.
The sight before her almost broke her.
Daniel lay motionless, his head wrapped in thick bandages, tubes running from his arms, machines keeping watch over every heartbeat. The confident young man she knew was almost unrecognisable.
Whispers floated through the room.
"He doesn't remember anyone."
"He looks at us... but there's no recognition."
One by one, family members stepped closer, calling out his name, hoping for even the slightest sign. Instead, Daniel grew increasingly restless. At one point, in sheer frustration and confusion, he reached out, grabbed the neatly tied bun of one of his sisters-in-law, and pulled it hard. Probably it wasn't anger...it was the confusion of a mind trying desperately to make sense of a world it no longer recognised. The room fell silent. Some looked shocked, others heartbroken.
Shruti froze at the doorway.
A strange fear gripped her
Then, quite by chance, Daniel's eyes drifted to the doorway.
There stood Shruti.
Every eye in the room turned towards her. Nobody quite knew who she was or why she was there.
Her heart pounded so loudly she could hear nothing else.
She hesitated for a moment before gathering the courage to walk towards his bedside,
Before she could say a word, Daniel with tears in his eyes, held her hand tightly, looked into her wet eyes, and whispered just one word.
"Shruti."
Nothing else.
In that single moment, nothing else mattered to her. Not the uncertainty. Not the unspoken relationship. Not the differences in culture or religion.
He remembered her. And that was enough. From that day onward, she knew she could move mountains for this man.

More than three decades have passed since that unforgettable moment.
Today, Daniel and Shruti have shared thirty-five years of a happy marriage. They continue to respect each other's faiths without ever asking the other to change. They raised a daughter who grew up embracing and honouring both traditions.
Their arguments over the most trivial things are legendary...often hilarious for anyone fortunate enough to witness them. Yet beneath the playful banter lies an unwavering friendship and a love that has quietly stood every season of life.
Some memories may fade.
But love has a remarkable way of remembering exactly where it belongs.
Based on a true story.
